Organizing The Playroom

Organizing The Playroom.  After the initial groan, I am a NUT about organizing the playroom for my eight year old.  I love discovering all the treasures that are hiding, scattered, and creating a giant mess!

I also love seeing my daughter rediscover all the treasures as well.  Sometimes, she lets me move a few things to the give away box or the trash.

The sense of accomplishment (small chunks and the overall result) is a high I enjoy.  It gives me a sense of control in my own environment, and makes it easier to dust and vacuum. Win Win!

There are several zones in the playroom: School, Science Lab, Nature, Art & Crafts, Electronics, and Toys.  First, I'll categorize the items into these sections, then adjust the furniture to support those items.  Once, each section is set up, then I refine the items within that section - to make the items easy to see and or grab.

Having open space is important to my daughter.  She likes to dance, do large art projects on the floor, build things - oh, and the punching bag...  I have to make sure the punching bag won't hit anything!  We had a workout space once - but it was covered 2 feet deep of stuffed animals the past several weeks, soooooooo - no more workout space in the playroom!

I also go through the arts and crafts projects and switch up the displays on the walls.  (I have yet to go through all of the retired art to archive properly, but that will be another day.)  My husband went to Aldi today and brought back an odd box which happens to make a perfect magazine holder!  (There's that adrenaline rush again - lol!)

I have to finish the arts and crafts section, then I will take a picture of the room.  I'll also take a "before" picture next time (I'll get over my embarassment of such a messy room) so you can appreciate the "after" picture.

The hardest part for me is to get started.  My feet and maybe my back will hurt when it's all done, but the sense of satisfaction I'll get will be my salve!  The reduction in overall stress also helps - having an organized area to function in vs. mayhem and clutter really improves my mental space.

With an organized playroom, our homeschool runs better.  Providing an excellent education for my daughter is a high priority to me, and a messy school area is not the right environment for that to occur.

My daughter is inspired to keep an organized area neat and tidy - not so much when it is messy.  She also is running her imagination of what and how and where things will end up.  I welcome her input whenever she offers it.  I want her to feel pride in the process and result - and I will eventually pass the torch to her as she matures.  Then I'll go looking for others' rooms' I can get my hands on!

The idea of organizing areas for other people (and getting paid for it) has been intriguing me more and more.  Being my own boss, getting the rush of a redo, and generating income sounds good to me.  I'm all for the empowerment for myself and for the recipient of a newly reorganized space.

Do you have any tips or questions regarding reorganizing the playroom, or other areas of your home?  Let me know in the comments - I'd love to help and/or get better!
